On Ukraine’s Independence Day, Bulgaria joined Denmark, President of the Security Council, together with 50 UN Member States, in reaffirming unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the United Nations participated in the Security Council’s open debate on the Council’s working methods and the implementation of Document S/2024/507.

Bulgaria joined Denmark and 54 other countries in a stakeout at the United Nations marking five years since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. This grim anniversary is an opportunity to once again draw attention to the ongoing humanitarian and human rights crisis in the country, particularly the grave situation facing Afghan women and girls.

Bulgaria successfully concluded, together with Iraq, its role as co-facilitator of the intergovernmental negotiations on the resolution concerning the modalities for the Intergovernmental Review of the implementation of the Buenos Aires outcome document of the Second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation (BAPA+40), following the adoption of the resolution by the General Assembly.

During the United Nations Security Council Open Debate on the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, Ambassador Gergana Karadjova reaffirmed Bulgaria’s consistent commitment to peace, security and diplomacy.

The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Bulgaria to the United Nations, Ambassador Gergana Karadjova, participated in the United Nations Security Council High-Level Open Debate on “Peaceful Settlement of Disputes”, held under the agenda item “Maintenance of International Peace and Security.”

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Christo Polendakov participated in the High-Level Meeting on the Midterm Review of the New Urban Agenda, held under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria Christo Polendakov participated in the Ministerial Segment of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. In his national statement, Deputy Minister Polendakov emphasized that, amid growing global uncertainty and increasingly complex challenges, the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development requires effective international cooperation, strong institutions, and full respect for international law. He stressed that Bulgaria regards peace, human rights, and sustainable development as mutually reinforcing objectives and supports efforts towards a more effective and modern United Nations.

Ambassador Gergana Karadjova met with the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Alexander De Croo.

In her statement during the United Nations General Assembly’s annual debate on the Responsibility to Protect, Ambassador Gergana Karadjova called for the more effective implementation of the Responsibility to Protect principle by strengthening the mandates of, and support for, the Secretary-General’s Special Advisers on the Prevention of Genocide and on the Responsibility to Protect.
