Maya Dobreva has been Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Republic of Moldova since August 2023.
She joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria in 1991 and has more than three decades of experience in senior diplomatic and managerial positions.
She served as Director General for Political Affairs and Political Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with responsibility for security policy, the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy, the Common Security and Defence Policy, NATO, the OSCE, sanctions and hybrid threats. She chaired the interinstitutional working groups on the evacuation from Afghanistan and on the war in Ukraine.
Prior to her current appointment, she served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Kingdom of Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (2016–2020) and to Montenegro (2009–2013), and as Deputy Head of Mission in Canada and Belarus.
She also served as Director of the Southeast Europe Directorate, Europe III Directorate, Europe II Directorate and the Foreign Economic Policy Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
She holds Master's degrees in Economics and Labour Management from the University of National and World Economy in Sofia. She has completed professional training in international trade, business administration and European institutions in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the United States, the Republic of Korea and Finland.
Ambassador Dobreva has received numerous state decorations, including the Order of Leopold II (Commander) from the Kingdom of Belgium, state decorations from the Kingdom of Spain and the Portuguese Republic, the Order of the Montenegrin Flag, Second Class, a state decoration from the President of Montenegro for her contribution to the country's European integration, as well as distinctions from His Holiness Pope John Paul II and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bulgaria.
She is fluent in English and has professional proficiency in Russian, Montenegrin/Serbian and German.
